The Mussorgsky (Mikhailovsky) Opera and Ballet Theatre
The action takes place in the Spanish city of Seville where people have a good time on corrida, while in taverns the queen is Carmen, a gypsy girl. The passion flashes between her and soldier Jose. Jose; loses his head from his love for Carmen, breaks off his relationship with his bride, escapes from service, and lives in the camp of smugglers together with Carmen. However she soon stopped loving him because their characters were completely different. Carmen appreciates freedom above all, while Jose dreams of a quiet life of a peasant. But as he cannot live without Carmen, meeting her on a holiday, he threatens her. Carmen is relentless, and all is over between them. She asserts her freedom by death. The plot of the opera is borrowed from P. Merime's short story under the same title. Soon after an unsuccessful premiere in Paris in 1876 the opera was received by public of St. Petersburg and many cities of Europe with triumphal success.
