The Mariinsky (Kirov Ballet) Theatre
This ballet tells the story of the Indian bayadere (temple dancer) under the name of Nikia. Despite of her love for Nikia, Solor the warrior breaks the oath he had given her and marries someone else. His new wife demands that he poison Nikia, and the bayadere dies bitten by a snake hidden in a basket of flowers. In the final act the repentant Solor dreams of looking for his love in the Kingdom of Shadows. Like Orpheus and Albert in Giselle, Solor finds Nikia and tries to assure her that he will not leave her ever, but Nikia slips away from him.
