The Mariinsky (Kirov Ballet) Theatre
U.S. Navy Lieutenant Pinkerton, known for his levity, falls in love with the young Japanese girl Cio-Cio-San, known as Madama Butterfly. She loves him passionately and leaves her marriage for him in spite of the fact that all relatives turned away from her. Soon after the wedding Pinkerton leaves. He does not appear for three years, and his wife brings up her child alone and thinks of him. When at last he returns, he shows her his new wife and demands to give his child to him. She submits to his will but cannot go through her suffering and dishonor.
