The Mariinsky (Kirov Ballet) Theatre
The opera is based on A. Pushkin's poem "Poltava". The action takes place during the rule of Peter the Great. Ambitious hetman Mazepa has plans to secede Ukraine from Russia and to transfer the country under the authority of a foreign power. His plans are revealed by Kochubey, whose daughter Maria is in love with the traitor. The hetman is tormented with inconsistent feelings love to his daughter and thirst of revenge to Kochubey. But his love for his power takes the upper hand. He orders to execute Kochubey and his friends. Maria finds all about it too late, after the executions. The outcome is tragic Maria loses her mind, all colleagues of her father are killed, and Mazepa runs away.
