Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
This is a story of a tragic life of the young wife of an eminent merchant Izmaylov. Having grown fond of worker Sergey, she for the sake of him becomes the murderer of her father-in-law who revealed his betrayal in the absence of the husband. Together they kill Katerina's husband who returned unexpectedly. In the middle of the wedding between Katerina and Sergey their terrible crime is discovered. Together they are seized and sent to hard labor. On the way Sergey accuses Katerina of all troubles and in her presence makes advances at another woman. Treachery and renunciation of her loved one, and torments of conscience push Katerina to death. The plot of the opera is based on the stories of N. Leskov, a known writer of the 19th century.
